Google Algorithm Updates: How can you keep up?

After an extremely successful event in 2018, iGB Affiliate Conference returned to Lisbon for this year’s edition of the iGaming gathering. UniK SEO participated in the event and our Business Director, Grégoire Lacan, hosted a talk about Google Algorithm Updates: All We Hear is Radio Google. In this post, we cover the main topics discussed in the presentation. At the end of the page, you may find the Complete Presentation PDF for Free Download.

Why do you really need to read this article? Truth is that managing a business through the intricacies of Google’s Algorithm Updates is not an easy task – not even for the best players in the industry. Being prepared to adapt your strategies quickly is a matter of organization, knowledge and experience. In fact, being able to follow Google’s rules up close is a crucial part of any SEO strategy and a priority for every SEO professional.

All We Hear is Radio Google: Understanding Google Algorithm Updates

Understanding Google and its algorithm updates is, without a doubt, of uttermost importance for every SEO professional – after all, it’s our job to work with Google. However, for less involved business owners or non-specialized marketers, it may seem difficult to keep up with all the updates to the algorithm that rules the web. Read on to get to know algorithm updates better and understand where your strategy should be aiming.

What is an Algorithm Update?

Even though we don’t always notice, the truth is that Google changes its ranking algorithm almost daily.

To understand algorithm updates, the first step is to understand Google itself. Even as a user-oriented entity that aims to “organize the internet”, Google still needs to make money. Updates are Google’s way of managing the internet community in order to better serve all these goals.

Algorithms help Search Engines to measure the relevance and quality of websites, allowing them to build the ranking in the search results pages in a way that privileges their purposes.

In its early years, Google only made a handful of yearly updates to its algorithm. As the digital era evolved, nowadays there are minor changes done every day – most of which are unannounced and even go unnoticed – and a few more significant updates, implemented less frequently. So, basically, now there are thousands of changes every year – 2 to 3 per day. How crazy is it to keep up with all of that?

How to be Prepared for a Google Update

However challenging the Google algorithm updates sound to you at this point, there are ways to make the best use of them, and even to use them in your advantage, surpassing your competitors.

There is no doubt that Google algorithm updates are becoming more ubiquitous. In times like these, it is key to stay white-hat, informed and reactive with your SEO, Grégoire reinforced.

In short, our speaker presented these as the main topics to pay attention to:

  • Don’t lay back and relax: no matter how good your SEO is right now, you are not safe.
  • Always invest in creating great content: As it is common to say, content is king. Always prioritize user experience, as Google considers it one of the main factors to rank your website. In fact, most updates are released having in mind the improvement of the UX.
  • Build natural backlinks, as these are key to drive quality organic traffic to your website.
  • Perform regular audits on your website. It is crucial to be aware of your website’s SEO state, especially since it can suddenly change with Google Algorithm Updates.
  • Read as much as you virtually can: It is key to be informed about SEO history, present situation and future predictions. The best advice we can give you is to pay attention to SEO blogs, newsletters, online communities and social media groups.

Download your Free PDF

As usual, we are making the PDF from Gregóire’s presentation available for free. Download it for more insight on the topics presented by our Business Manager at his talk in iGB Lisbon 2019.

In the PDF, you can find summarized information about the most impactful algorithm updates, updates regarding iGaming and, most importantly, more tips to prepare your website!

How to get Rich Snippets featured using Structured Data

Rich Snippets or Google Featured Snippets are search results with an emphasized layout format that provides users concise and direct answers to their questions.

If you’re still wondering if you have ever seen a featured snippet before, think of the snippets that appear above the first result on a SERP when you conduct a search. That spot above the first place is called the Zero Position. The Zero Position is a privileged spot.

According to Google, “what’s different with featured snippets is that it is enhanced to draw user attention on the results page”. Featured snippets are a type of search result that includes a precise answer, the source link, page title and URL.

Is it possible for your page to appear on a Google Featured Snippet then? And how can you make that happen? First, let’s talk about structured data.

What is Structured Data?

Structured data is code written in a specific format that enables Search Engines to understand it, process it and use it.

It can be implemented either in the <head> or <body> section of your page or it can be dynamically injected and it looks like the image below.

Structured data: How does it look?

Advantages of Structured Data

  • Increases Visibility
  • Increases CTR
  • Improve Local SEO
  • Helps Build Brand Image
  • Increases Trust
  • Helps getting featured in Voice Search
  • Indirectly increases your SEO

Types of Featured Snippets

In the end, what are the types of snippets you can achieve with structured data? There are many, and the list keeps on growing:

  • Article / Blog Post
  • Breadcrumb
  • Review / Aggregated Review
  • Product / Service
  • Event
  • Local Business / Organization
  • Logo
  • Q&A *
  • FAQ *
  • HowTo *
  • Sitelink Searchbox
  • Author / Person / Artist
  • Course / Recipes
  • TV Episodes / Movies

UniK SEO is Now Google Shopping Certified

Great news! UniK SEO just acquired its third specialization! As a Google Partner, we have just achieved specialization in Shopping Advertising. This means that our company is certified by Google as having the knowledge and skills for high performance with Google Shopping strategies. We are now Google Shopping certified!

Shopping Advertising adds up to our other two certifications, Mobile and Search, and can bring numerous advantages to both the company and our clients. Read through to learn more about Google’s Shopping Advertising and the opportunities it creates.

What is Google Shopping?

Shopping Advertising is ideal for retailers. It helps to promote products online, attract customers to your website or physical store and find better-qualified leads.

Google Shopping works with two platforms: Google Ads and the Google Merchant Center.
Google Ads is the place for your shopping campaigns. Similarly to other campaigns, here you can manage your budget and bids, receive feedback and insights and invest in optimizing them based on your performance. Google Merchant Center is the place for your product feed. Through it, you can send all your product information to Google. They will use your data from both platforms to create ads and place them where your potential customers can see them.

These ads are different than your typical text ad. Shopping ads are designed specifically to advertise products in the best way. Besides the product title and description, they also display a photo of the item, its price, store name and other useful information. These ads allow the user to get to know the product better at first sight, without having to enter the website. Thus, they are able to give you more qualified leads.

Shopping Advertising strongly relates to SEO because it involves Google determining when your ads will show up. They do this by weighing your feed, site and bids to check which search queries trigger those ads.

Your Shopping ads may appear in Google Shopping, Google Search (next to search results), Google Search Partner websites such as Image Search and YouTube and in the Google Display Network.

Google Merchant Center
Google Merchant Center

What are the advantages of Google Shopping Advertising?

– Increase in traffic: Statistics show that many retail businesses have their click-through rates significantly increased when they upgrade from text ads to Shopping ads – sometimes the rates double or even triple.

– Better qualified leads: Featuring your product information directly in your ads means that the users will get to know your product even before they click the ad. Better informed customers are more likely to complete purchases.
– Easy retail-centric campaign management: Shopping ads use product attributes instead of keywords. This allows you to easily manage your products, groups and campaigns using Google Ads.

– Broader presence:
Several Shopping ads can appear for a given search. These ads can also be accompanied by one of your text ads, if relevant. Thus, your exposure to potential customers will significantly increase.

– Powerful reporting and competitive data:
Google Shopping lets you monitor performance at several levels of granularity. This means that you can filter products, use benchmarking data for competition optimizations and use the Bid Simulator tool to identify opportunities, for instance. Hence, the optimization of your campaigns becomes more practical and efficient.

How Can I Get Results With Google Shopping?

Getting results with Google Shopping depends on three main factors.
Firstly, you need to master your feed. From product characteristics to images and prices, you need to be on top of your products to be able to optimize your feed in the most efficient way.
Your bidding also needs to be on spot. Shopping ads work similarly to other Google Ads ad formats. Thus, your ads will take part in an auction and you will only be charged when a user clicks an ad redirecting to your landing page or to your local inventory (hosted by Google). You get to decide how much you’re willing to pay for each click, and hence it is important to know how to analyze the situation and bid.

Lastly, monitoring and optimizing your campaign is crucial. As we mentioned, Google Shopping allows you to make granular optimizations to your campaign based on granular performance data, which can be quite useful and save you resources.

Get in touch with us if you’d like to develop a personalized Google Shopping Strategy for your business. We’d be happy to help you get results.

Guest Post Opportunities: How to Identify High-Quality Websites

First of all, let’s define ‘Guest Post’. What is it? A Guest Post is a text that you create and publish on a blog as a guest author. It’s something positive for you, the content writer, and a positive outcome for the blog publisher or webmaster.

By writing guest posts, it’s possible to generate recognition within a particular niche and publicize your work within it. In addition, according to the requirements of that particular website where you’ll publish your work, you may also earn a backlink. By doing this, you’ll be establishing authority and interaction among your targeted audience.

This interaction, or engagement, is essential for you to get your website the required authority on Google and other major search engines and, therefore, a better ranking position in the search results.

However, to identify the ideal quality of the website where you’ll want to publish your guest post, it’s necessary to take into account a range of metrics or KPIs.  Using industry leading tools for a better analysis of each site can help you do this.

To Identify High-Quality Websites, you will need to analyze:

The Niche

Google pays attention to the kind of websites that link to your website.

The more closely related a guest blogging opportunity is to your niche, the better the backlink it will be for your SEO efforts.

To better identify the niche, you can use an interesting metric called Topical Trust Flow. With this metric, it’s possible to see the topics that a website is primarily about, how much influence it has for each industry and also if there are any immediate spam issues that you need to address for your own site.

Do Follow Links

Ideally you want to find a site that offers DoFollow links. If a blog or site doesn’t use the NoFollow tag, Google will acknowledge the link and thus give it credit and ‘SEO juice’. If a site does use the NoFollow tag, Google doesn’t acknowledge the link. While there’s still an advantage to having NoFollow links (a diverse link profile, referral traffic, website exposure/recognition etc.), DoFollow links are much more influential in improving the authority of the linked-to webpage on your site. Check the source code of a website to see if your targeted site uses NoFollow links. These look like this:

<a href=”http://www.xpto.com” rel=”nofollow”>Example of NoFollow</a>

Content Indexing Engine

Essentially refers to the adding of a webpage’s content into Google.

Check “article’s title” or “article URL” on Google search to confirm that Google is indeed indexing the guest post or page.

Look ‘n Feel: UX & Responsive Design

Design affects how search engines perceive websites.

Intuitive site structure with easy navigation and proper use of HTML elements and multimedia will boost SEO.

Google favors websites that are optimized for people using mobile and smartphone devices.

Posting Frequency

Higher frequency of posting encourages Google to crawl a website site more often, which will result in your content getting index faster. Identify a website which is posting frequently to ensure Google is paying attention to it.

Where Will it be Published?

Will the guest post be published on the homepage? In which category will it be posted? Avoid so-called “ghost” or “orphan” pages to boost visibility of the article.

“Ghost” or “Orphan” pages exist on the web, but don’t have links into it from anywhere else on the website. They are not positive at all for your business’s SEO, since Google assumes that a page that doesn’t get any links from its own website has no importance. Plus, Google is often suspicious of the existence of these categories and that’s not something you want your site to be associated with!

Social & Audience Factors

Although these things don’t have a direct effect on SEO, social engagements (likes, comments and shares) are all important actions for giving content additional reach. Google indicated that Social signals are important when considering the quality of a piece of content.

Site Optimized Properly + SSL Certificate

Make sure the site you want to publish on is both easy for users to discover and easy for search bots to understand.Good indicators include page titles, headings, and meta descriptions.

Is the site HTTPS? SSL certificates protect websites from attacks and give visitors confidence that the site is authentic and trustworthy.

To identify High-Quality Websites, consider these site metrics and tools:

DA (Domain Authority) | MOZ Bar

The DA is a search engine ranking score developed by Moz that predicts how well a website will rank on search engine result pages (SERPs). A Domain Authority score ranges from 1 to 100, with higher scores corresponding to a greater ability to rank.

Organic Traffic | SEM Rush or Similar Web

Organic traffic refers to all the visitors that come to a site from search engines.

Percentage of Organic Traffic (Traffic Source) | SEM Rush or Similar Web

Find out which are the main sources of traffic and mainly the percentage of Organic Traffic to know how well a site ranks on the SERPs. The chance of the article being found in Google Search will thus be higher.

LIS – Link Influence Score (Quality Backlinks) | SEO Profiler

The link influence score is calculated based on the quality and the numbers of links that point to a site. The higher the quality of the links, the higher the LIS. The higher the website’s LIS, the greater influence it has on the rankings of  linked-to pages.

The analysis of these factors and metrics help us to take the decision to the all-important question: to publish or not to publish!
